History
The first African American Ball was presented on Saturday, January 22, 1994, at the Continental Inn of Lexington. This affair was organized as a “Black Tie” charity event, scheduled to take place on the 3rd Saturday in January.
The 2008 African American Ball marks fifteen years of continuous success. It was introduced and launched as the first public African American Ball of its kind anywhere. It has since become the largest public African American Ball in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. More than 6,000 guests have experienced this classic annual event since 1994. It has quite often been imitated but never duplicated.
In 2003, the African American Ball broadened in size, scope and stature by announcing the relocation of the event to the Lexington Convention Center’s Bluegrass Ballroom ONE & TWO – Overlooking Triangle Park, downtown. This was made possible through a longstanding partnership with the Lexington Center Corporation and the Hyatt Regency Lexington.
